Student Led Conferences

Last Friday was a special day in the school. Student Led Conferences offer a meaningful and powerful way for parents to learn about their children's progress. Beginning in JK students and parents sit together for up to an hour. During this time the students share their learning in all areas of the curriculum. This includes their regular studio work such as math, language and Units of Inquiry. They also demonstrate their learning in French, Music and Phys Ed during their conference.
This is a powerful way for parents to experience the progress their children make during the school year.
During the SLC day, our Grade Six class holds it's PYP Exhibition. This is always a wonderful days in the school, a true celebration of student learning.

March News

There are eight days left in the winter term, and much to accomplish as we steer our way into March. We are excited to see you all on Friday at our Student Led Conferences and the PYP Exhibition, and we have an exciting agenda for next week before we reach the final day of term. By then, of course, we will all be happy to begin our March Break.
As an international school, our goal is to develop students who are independent thinkers, curious about the workings of their world, and willing to step up and take action to make the world a better place. Understanding points of view, being willing to take a different perspective, and demonstrating empathy are essential skills of a good citizen and a globally minded person.
At SBS we use whatever opportunities we can to develop these attributes in our students, both in and out of class. This includes our choices of reading materials, the approach to our units of inquiry, our attempts to teach critical thinking to our students beginning in JK. Field trips expand students' horizons. Managing disputes and disagreements between students is an essential part of this learning as well. As you know, we believe that learning happens everywhere, that students thrive in a ‘permeable schoolhouse’.
March Break is approaching and many of our students will be visiting family, participating in camps and programs or traveling to interesting destinations. These opportunities broaden your children’s experience and encourage them to be open to difference and new perspectives. I hope that they all enjoy the change of routine as well as learn from new and exciting experiences. Have a safe and happy March Break.

Skating is an element of our Phys Ed program in GR 1, 2 and 3. This year we are having great weather and lots of fun at the rink. The winter term is easier when we fill the days with great winter sports, and skating is a highlight for the kids.

Our thanks to our parent volunteers who help with lacing skates and on the ice. And to our teachers for sharing their enthusiasm for winter fun with their students!

Ski Day 2017

Ski Day was a hit again this year. The buses left at 7:00 am filled with excited young skiers, parents and teachers. Everyone had lessons in the morning and time to ski together after lunch. The weather cooperated and the day was a success. Just in time for dismissal the buses returned with a load of happy, tired students and their chaperones.

Our thanks to the teachers and parents who work so hard to make ski day so special for our students every year!

Lion King is coming to Sunnybrook! Our annual musical brings the community together in an amazing arts effort, and a fabulous show. Preprations for Lion King have begun, and auditions take place at the end of January.

The drum and dance workshop today start the music term off with exciting learning of world music at the wonderful workshop provided by Fana Soro. Students in Grades 1 - 6 were enthralled by his presentation and teaching of West African drum music. Their drumming resonated throughout the school - it was wonderful!

January Newsletter

Welcome to January 2017 - Happy New Year to all Sunnybrook families and friends! From the school perspective, the winter term provides a time of focus and renewal and a fresh beginning for students and teachers as we proceed through the program and the year. After relaxing holidays filled with family time, reading, and some work, I'm glad to be back to my routines, writing for the Newsletter, and getting the term off to a splendid start.

Our team returned from winter break refreshed and ready for a great term and we kicked off with two productive and inspiring PD days. Monday was set aside for the Avenue Road Art School to present a delightful workshop. While creating artwork ourselves, we reviewed the Elements of Art, in preparation for further work on our written Arts curriculum. It certainly was a lovely way to begin the new year together. Tuesday was devoted to further in-depth work on the 6 + 1 Writing Traits and assessment strategies, as well as yearbook prep and time in our studios to prepare for our students’ return. In all, the two days gave our team a strong base for our journey through the coming term.
I hope you all had a wonderful relaxing holiday. It’s fabulous to welcome everyone back to a great new term of living and learning at SBS.

Singing for Seniors

Our Grade 5 and 6 classes walked to our local retirement residence to sing some holiday songs for the residents of Meighan Lodge.  After singing for their audience, students share Christmas cards with the residents, and chat with them about their experiences, memories, and hopes for the holidays. This action is a highlight of December activities every year at SBS.

Holiday Concert

Our students certainly sang in the winter season with enthusiasm and energy. Grade 5 and 6 students performed on their recorders and the Junior and Senior Choirs entertained us with some very special music. The whole school choir sang a number of songs magnificently.

The December Concert brings the SBS community together around music. This year's selections put us in a festive mood for a wonderful holiday! Our thanks to Ms Berthiaume and our students for the lovely evening.

SK Concert

On Thursday, December 15, SK presented The Littlest Christmas Tree. In spite of the dreadful weather, the concert was well attended, and we were so proud of our students' performances. The show was spectacular; the SK students sang their hearts out and adted their roles beautifully. The costumes were wonderful, making for a splendid show full of holiday spirit. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a success.
