Edwards Gardens Scavenger Hunt

Posted on September 30

Last week our Cross Country team participated in a meet on a gorgeous fall day. On days like that we plan activities for students who aren't on the team, to make the time their peers were off running into a meaningful day for them as well.

A bus took students and teachers to Edwards Gardens for a day of nature observation and sketching. We started with a splendid hike and scavenger hunt, searching for specific native plants as well as invasive species, learning the significance of the many trees and plants that grow in Toronto's ravines and parks. We explored the creek and gardens, the fields and woods.

Before we headed back to school, students pulled out their sketchbooks and spent a relaxed hour sketching the scenery, including the beautiful gardens. What a day we had!

The Annual SBS Terry Fox Run

Posted on September 24

Sunnybrook School gives back to the community with participation in the Terry Fox Run; students learn about contribution Terry Fox made to Canada and the courage he showed in his run across Canada.

In spite of the rainy weather, parents, teachers and students ran for an hour before returning to school. Our youngest students in JK and SK ran along Merton Street; we are very proud of their enthusiasm. It's a great event for the school and a powerful experience for our students. Over the years SBS has raised over $60,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

UPDATES FOR SEPTEMBER 2015 - Posted on September 8

Such a great morning with all the smiles and happy faces - uniforms looking fresh, shoes polished, fun back packs for a new year, and best of all, students bouncing into school so glad to be here - what more could a principal want on the first day of school? Be sure to check out our photo board in the front hall to see what the SBS team have been up to this summer!

We look forward to another splendid year together at SBS in 2016/17. We are committed to making student learning meaningful and engaging, from the moment your children enter SBS today until our last day of school in June.

The major new initiative we’ve taken on this year is the 6+1 Traits Writing Program. During the summer our teachers read the books to become familiar with the theory and practice of this innovative approach to teaching writing. Libby Tachles spent a day last week taking us through the program, beginning with theory and ending with many practical tips to get us started. We are excited to use these new strategies to help our students better understand the elements of good writing.

On behalf of our team, I welcome you to the 2016/17 school year, and remind you that there are many great ways to be involved in school life, starting right away in September. Check for events and dates in this newsletter and on our website. We'd love to see you at these events - please do join us!

JK / SK Author visit

Posted on May 27

Each year we bring authors to the school, to enrich our students' understanding of literature, and how books come to be.

This year the author and poet, Kari-Lynn Winters came to spend a magical hour with our youngest students. This author of over 15 delightful children's books created aspecial performance in which our students became part of her stories. Our JK and SK students were spellbound throughout the entire performance.

Our thanks to Kari for a wonderful, engaging introduction to the importance of authors in our lives.

SBS presented Peter Pan to sold out audiences

Posted on May 26

Peter Pan came to the stage last week for two brilliant performances. Every student in GR 1 - 6 was on stage in a song and dance number, and the effect was wonderful. Opening Night was great; we didn't think it possible but Closing Night was even better. Our Pirates and Mermaids, Lost Boys and Warriors, and everyone else in the cast performed beautifully for the audience. Congratulations to all our performers!
