Valentines = Friendship at SBS

Posted on February 14

Friendships are one of the most important experiences at school. We like to take advantage of every opportunity to help our students understand the value of their school friendships; Valentines Day gives us one of those moments.

Kids love to celebrate their friendships with Valentines. This year our Action/Service club, Kids Can Too, added to the fun with a special 'friendify' event. Everyone at school drew a name of a colleague or peer, and found some small, special way to recognize and 'friendify' them. We all wore Valentines colours, had a lot of fun, and enjoyed some wonderful moments with SBS friends.

JK and SK really enjoy this event, and celbrated with their special hats and a great party!

SBS goes to the Symphony

Posted on February 9

Our Senior Grades visited the Torono Symphony at Roy Thomson Hall for a Science and the Symphony presentation. The symphony paired up with the Science Centre to create a wonderful presentation of music and science for students from across the city. Our Parent Association generously funded the field trip for GR 4, 5 and 6.

Everyone returned excited about the wonderful experience they had blending music and science for a unique learning experience for all!

Spelling Bee

Our annual Spelling Bee was an exciting morning of word duelling as the four finalists in each class faced off to determine the winners.

Our Grade Two finalists carried on for over half an hour until a winner was decided!

Congratulations to all our spellers throughout the school for contributing to the fun!

JK Five Senses Festival

Posted on January 22

At the end of the Unit of Inquiry exploring the Five Senses the JK class holds a Festival, to share their learning with their parents. This event provides JK students an opportunity to explore the nature of celebrations as well, as an extension of their Celebrations Unit.

The JK Studio has five stations in the festival where students show their parents activites to demonstrate their understanding of how they perceive the world through their senses.

Each student makes a Five Senses hat to wear on the day of the festival; the hat demonstrates the five ways that we perceive our world.

Kids Helping Kids | SBS action for Syrian refugees

Posted on January 19

Our school collected backpacks with essential and fun items to give Syrian refugee children when they arrive in Toronto. Every backpack included a stuffie and a heartwarming welcome note from a student, in addition to school supplies, toothbrushes, hats, mitts and more.
This school wide action was a tremendous experience for our students, and a huge help for the local NGO who is helping Syrian refugees get settled in Toronto.

Care & Share

Posted on December 10

Our December community action is a contribution to the Red Cross Care & Share food drive. Families contribute, students sort and package the donations and make Christmas cards for the residents of Meighan Lodge. This year our Grade Two class took over 60 boxes of food to the Red Cross and helped sort the donations.

Remembrance Day

Posted on November 11

SBS Alum, Justin Low, attended our Assembly and spoke with students in honour of Remembrance Day. Justin is an SBS graduate and we were proud to have him return to speak with our students about Canadian Veterans, their role in our history and why we honour them each year. He also shared stories about his role as a member of the Queens Own Rifles.

After his presentation our students had lots of great questions for him, and we learned so much about the role of a reservist in our military.

Thank you for your contribution to our Remembrance Day Assembly, Justin!
